Applicability of smartphone-based fundus imaging (SBFI) for diabetic eye disease (DED) screening by para-medical staff in terms of image quality, compliance with the imaging protocol and diagnostic accuracy in rural areas of a low-income country is being conducted in Kenya, India and Bangladesh led by the University of Bonn, Germany.

- Linking up with an ophthalmic image reading centre for tele-ophthalmologic smartphone-based fundus imaging assessment at the Victoria Specialised Hospital
- Trial of a tele-ophthalmologic diabetic eye disease screening in Narail, Bangladesh
- Cost-effectiveness calculation of diabetic eye disease screening by smartphone-based fundus imaging (e.g. documenting direct/indirect cost, etc. using participant questionnaires)
