Organisation for Rural Community Development (ORCD)-an NGO registered by NGO Bureau Affiars.

The Organisation for Rural Community Development (ORCD) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation established in 2012 with a vision to promote sustainable and inclusive development in rural Bangladesh. The organisation was officially inaugurated on 20 December 2012 at Dariapur village in Narail district by a group of dedicated academics, professionals, and social leaders led by Professor Dr Amirul Islam, along with S.M. Manuruzzaman, Md Sadequl Islam, AUSM Saifullah, Professor (Col. Retired) Moniruzzaman, Md Rafiqul Islam, Dr Tauhidul Islam and K.M. Abdul Baki. ORCD was founded in response to the persistent socio-economic challenges faced by rural populations, with a commitment to creating practical, community-driven solutions.
ORCD adopts a holistic approach to rural development, focusing on four key pillars: Health, Education, Environment, and Income generation. Its mission is to build communities that are healthy, educated, environmentally sustainable, and economically self-reliant. The organisation works closely with local communities to design and implement programs that address both immediate needs and long-term development goals. While its primary activities are based in Bangladesh, ORCD envisions expanding its model to other developing regions globally.
Since its inception, ORCD has implemented several impactful projects in Narail district. A flagship initiative includes a large-scale population-based study “Population-based Diabetes and Eye Studies (BPDES)”, which provided free screening and treatment services to approximately 5,000 rural residents. This project not only improved access to essential healthcare but also generated valuable research findings that were presented at an international conference in Melbourne, International Diabetes Federation-Vancouver, Dubai, South Korea and Singapore. Such initiatives highlight ORCD’s integrated approach, combining service delivery with research to ensure evidence-based and scalable interventions.
Education is a central focus of ORCD’s work. The organisation strives to increase female education which is reflected by establishing a technical college in Dariapur. In the health sector, ORCD promotes awareness and prevention of common diseases, provides basic medical support, and addresses critical public health challenges such as diabetes, vision impairment, and high blood pressure. Environmental sustainability is promoted through community education and large-scale tree plantation programs, encouraging responsible use of natural resources and long-term ecological balance.
Research and evidence-based practice are integral to ORCD’s mission. The organisation conducts community-based studies to better understand local challenges and inform effective interventions. Findings are disseminated through academic publications and international conferences, contributing to global knowledge on rural development and public health.
ORCD firmly believes that national progress begins with the development of rural communities. Through innovation, collaboration, and a strong commitment to social responsibility, ORCD continues to work towards empowering rural populations to lead healthier, more educated, and economically secure lives.
